Tibetan prayer mill (mani khorlo)

A Tibetan mill is a hollow cylinder of any size fixed so that it can rotate. Attached to the metal or wooden body of the mill is a string or chain carrying a metal ball, which is used to keep the mill running. On the surface of the body of the mill a mantra is carved or sculpted. Inside the cylinder are strips of paper on which mantras, sutras, or prayers are printed. With each turn of the mill, the prayers inside and outside are read and thus the Buddha's teachings are spread to the surrounding area. The small mills usually strengthen the energy centre of the person who spins them.
