GANESHA
One of the most popular Hindu gods. God of prudence, wisdom and art.
He is kind, helping to remove obstacles and difficulties. Because of his benevolent nature, he is generally regarded as the protector of dwellings. He is invoked before beginning any new journey, venture, or move. Ganesha has an elephant head, trunk (which removes obstacles), sometimes one tusk. He usually has two rows of arms in which he carries the familiar attributes: a shell, a disc, a scepter and a water lily. Its bulky abdomen contains the entire universe. His sacred animal is the rat, which sits at his feet.
There are many legends about how Ganesha came to have the elephant's head. For the sake of interest, we present the following:
Mother Parvati created her son Ganesha from a piece of her clothing, in the absence of her husband (Shiva). One day she sent Ganesha to watch the house and not let anyone in while she was taking bath. At that time Shiva returned, (not knowing his son), suspecting that he had come across his wife's lover, he cut off Ganesha's head. On discovering the fact, Shiva went on his way and beheaded the first creature he met. He thus gave Ganesh the head of an elephant.
