Buddha
Buddhism is one of the oldest universal religions. It teaches us to look into our own souls, free ourselves from our negative thoughts, emotions and qualities, and instead develop the good ones. Its tool is meditation, a stilling of our minds that allows us to realize and understand the meaning of the world around us and to detach ourselves from selfishness and self-centeredness. Buddhism originated in India more than two thousand years ago and has influenced not only their spiritual life but has become a cornerstone of their philosophy, literature, art, politics and economy. Long before Buddhism disappeared from India, it spread to China, Japan, Indo-China, Tibet and gradually onwards to the whole world.
The founder of Buddhism, a man named Siddhartha Gautama, known as Buddha (translated as awakened or also enlightened), was, according to legend, a man of royal lineage who grew up in affluence, surrounded by beautiful things and people, and never knew death, decay, or illness. When he finally learned the true face of the world in adulthood, he left home and his newly born son, and set out to find a way to free himself from the suffering and pain associated with every existence and the constant cycle of rebirth. According to legend, he eventually discovered the path that avoids all extremes and achieved awakening, ultimate liberation from suffering and the cycle of life. For the rest of his life, he passed on his teachings to monks and commoners alike, and became for the whole world the figure of the eternal teacher, philosopher thinker and counsellor, a symbol of wisdom.
