Ganesha
One of the most popular Hindu gods. Ganesha is often depicted in various forms with different attributes, but is most often described as the god of prudence, wisdom and art. His four arms represent the mind, intellect, ego and conscience.
He is kind, helping to remove obstacles and difficulties. Because of his kindly nature, he is generally regarded as the protector of dwellings. He is invoked before beginning any new journey, venture, or move. Ganesha has an elephant's head, a curved trunk (which according to legends removes obstacles and allows one to distinguish reality from illusion), sometimes a single tusk as a symbol of the ability to overcome duality. His bulky belly hides the entire universe. His companion and steed is a rat, representing wisdom.
There are a number of legends dealing with how Ganesha got his elephant head. One of them is this:
Mother Parvati created her son Ganesha from a piece of her clothing, in the absence of her husband (Shiva). One day she sent Ganesha to watch the house and not let anyone in while she was taking bath. At that time Shiva returned, (not knowing his son), suspecting that he had come across his wife's lover, he cut off Ganesha's head. On discovering the fact, Shiva went on his way and beheaded the first creature he met. He thus gave Ganesh the head of an elephant.
