The spirit of tea is part of the Chinese tea ceremony. The statuette is placed on the tea sea and is poured over with tea, which drains into the bottom part of the tea sea. The occasional small pouring of tea on the tea spirit can be likened to a small sacrifice; in return, the tea spirit brings good cheer and well-being among the seated guests at the tea ceremony.
The custom of pouring the tea spirit has an obvious analogy with the dousing of water on statues of Buddhas under temple trees in Sri Lanka. Buddhas are watered there to make the faith of pilgrims grow like the roots of temple trees. Similarly, by watering the tea spirit, we can deepen the enjoyment of drinking a well-prepared tea.
