The tea spirit, in the form of two legs is supposed, to stand on the tea sea. When making tea, a little tea should be poured over it. Pouring the tea spirit symbolizes a small sacrifice. The custom of pouring water over the tea spirit has an obvious analogy with the pouring of water over the statues of Buddhas under the temple trees in Sri Lanka. The Buddhas are watered there to make the faith of pilgrims grow like the roots of temple trees. Similarly, by watering the tea spirit, we can deepen the enjoyment of drinking a well-prepared tea.
