The border of the flag represents gold - as a symbol of the Buddha's teachings, and the side without the border represents openness to all non-Buddhist teachings. The red stripes represent the ancestors of the Tibetans (the original tribes), the snow-capped mountain in the middle symbolizes Tibet itself, with the Sun at its peak. The two snow lions carry a three-coloured gem representing the Buddha, the dharma (the right way that honours the laws of morality and the cosmic law of Love) and the sangha (the community of awakened disciples of the Buddha). At the feet of the lions lies a two-colored gemstone as a symbol of ethical conduct. The flag of Tibet was established as the official flag of Tibet in 1955, by the 14th Dalai Lama - Tenzin Gyatso. Since the 1959 anti-Chinese uprising, it has been banned in the PRC, except in Hong Kong.
