A tarbush is a device that protects both the coals and the tobacco in the bowl from the weather (often called a wind guard ) when the hookah is used outdoors. Indoors, the tarbush is used at the beginning and end of smoking (when the coals has a lower heat release) to maintain an optimum temperature. In addition, it protects the immediate area around the hookah from falling hot coals (or parts of coals), which can fall from the hookah if handled carelessly and mark everything in its path.
